Questioning Pretty is a series of work Courtney completed in the third year of her degree. The works explore the idea of feminine representation in the media, specifically pertaining to the fashion and beauty industries. The drawings are replications of other artists (photographers) work. The images were selected to fit within the theory of Firth, Shaw, and Cheng; the idea that within advertising where a female is the subject the image can fit into one of seven categories, cute, trendy, exotic, sensual, the sex kitten, the girl next door and classic.

 

Courtney uses graphite pencil to create these drawings; the act of drawing is Courtney attempting to embody these ideals questioning what pretty s and weather we should be striving to embody it.
